A judge has ruled that a home in Columbus measuring more than 9,000 square feet is worth nearly $700,000 less than its appraisal for property tax purposes.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that the tax assessor's office had put a value of $1.925 million on Gunby Garrard's home for 2009. He appealed to the Board of Equalization, which reduced the value to $1.42 million. The Board of Tax Assessors appealed to Superior Court, where Judge William Rumer decided on $1.247 million. He ruled the appraisal failed to take into account the declining value of homes.
City attorney Clifton Fay said he was disappointed. Garrard's attorney declined comment.
Tax records show Garrard has paid more than $23,000 in property taxes on his home in each of the last two years.
