Study: Poor NYS schools lack basic resources

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Many schools in New York's poor districts lack basic resources six years after a landmark court ruling required the state to increase spending on public education.

That's according to a new study by Teachers College at Columbia University.

The New York Times says researches interviewed teachers, administrators and support staff at 33 schools with large numbers of low-income, struggling or disabled students. They found five schools weren't meeting state requirements in social studies. None offered the minimum amount of support services for struggling students.

The schools weren't identified.

The Campaign for Fiscal Equity, which won the court ruling, says the state is $5 billion behind what it pledged to spend.

The governor's office said the state last year prioritized low-income districts to receive a higher percentage of aid.
