A Long Island police department has had to borrow police cars from other departments because it lost so many vehicles during Superstorm Sandy.
Long Beach lost 17 police cars and 6 motorcycles during the storm and they put out a call across the country for loaner vehicles.
Departments from as far away as Florida responded with marked police vehicles. That's why residents of the oceanfront community are seeing Albany police vehicles, Port Authority SUVs and other cruisers patrolling the streets.
The city manager blames people who didn't head warnings to stay inside during the storm. Police crews went out to rescue people, and ended up destroying vehicles in the storm.
The sheriffs department in Palm Beach County, Fla. is donating 10 vehicles the department can keep.
The fire department also lost two fire trucks that will need to be replaced.
