CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
One more thing, about healthier snacks in vending machines. On Wednesday, the City Council approved an ordinance placing nutrition rules on food and drinks sold from machines in city buildings--including parks and schools. Restrictions on fat, calories, sugar and sodium go into effect next month.
There are plenty of good eats in the FOX 32 snack room. Water is available in all of the soda machines. I just wish they would make it as colorful and appealing as some of the unhealthy choices.
They put little 'fit pick' stickers on the options that are supposed to be healthier. There's one on Pop Tarts. Well, it does say 'baked with real fruit.'
The tuna salad with crackers looks harmless. Better than the chicken flavored noodles--that means there's nothing even remotely resembling a chicken that has ever been put in the packet.
The city's new vending machine rules restrict high-calorie drinks to 12 ounces and require healthier items to be placed at eye level and priced competitively with less healthy items.
Health advocates say the rules don't go far enough. Others object to the government getting involved. Mayor Emanuel says personal responsibility is they key.
I say giving us healthier choices and tempting us with less junk works.
