Residents say business stinking up Toccoa

Posted: Updated:
TOCCOA, Ga. -

People in one north Georgia community say it's time for a local business owner to wake up and smell reality. That's because neighbors and state regulators say what his company has been doing stinks.

A company called Wilbros has been taking all sorts of waste – food, chicken -- even human sewage -- and pouring the processed residue on wood chip in Toccoa. Ultimately, the stuff is sold as compost.

But regulators say when Wilbros owner Joe Wilbanks mixes those piles, the sour smell drifts over to schools and homes. People have complained about it for years.

So what's the state doing about all this? Is there anything more that could be done?
