Building facade collapses in Manhattan

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The FDNY says residents were evacuated out of a Manhattan apartment building on Christmas after part of its facade collapsed.

Fire officials say no one was injured but the seven-story building on Sixth Avenue near West 21st Street in Chelsea was being evacuated as a precaution.   Officials were not able to say how extensive the damage to the building is.

The FDNY received the call about the collapse at the 49-unit building around 7:00 p.m.  Parts of some decorative pillars, about 15 feet off the ground, crumbled off the ornate surface of the block-long building.

The damage left a 4-to-5-foot-tall pile of bricks on the ground.

"Part of the facade fell down and we all got evacuated from the building. We were given a few minutes to collect medication and everything we needed but I'm just a bit warm from running around and gather everything which is why I'm not wearing my coat," said resident Anna Backer.

Fire Chief Tom McCarthy said the evacuation was ordered as a precaution so engineers could check out the walls.  McCarthy said engineering inspections on Wednesday would determine how soon residents would be allowed to return.
