2 charged after police say deer slain during hunt in Warren - Los Angeles Local News, Weather, and Traffic

WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -- 19-year-old Myles Ehret and his half brother, 27-year-old William Francies (pictured), left court without comment Thursday. The two are charged with killing an animal -- a four year felony.

Investigators say they shot a deer with a bow and arrow in the woods south of 14 Mile off Van Dyke around noon on Friday.

Police say the two set out food for the deer and went in for the kill, dragging the animal out of the woods on a sled and using a rented U-Haul pickup truck to hall it down to the Franics home all the way in Riverview where police tracked them down thanks to witnesses near the woods.

"Because of an 11-year-old boy who observed these two individuals carrying the deer carcass out on a sled, and apparently they had gone into the woods and they had staked out there. They had a heater. They had food they'd set out and everything to do the job," said Warren Mayor Jim Fouts.

The animal lover is furious. It's illegal to hunt in Warren.

Ehret lives in Royal Oak and Francis in Riverview, and the two came to Warren, police say, because they saw online it's a good place to hunt.

People who live near the woods have complained of gunfire in the past. Fouts wants the word out it's illegal.

"I worry that other individuals are coming from other areas of Michigan to hunt in Warren, and that posses a serious danger," he said. "Warren is an unacceptable place to hunt. It's against the law in any city, but in Warren you go to jail."

Ehret and Francis are due back in court in January. They are currently out on bond.

Police say Francis did have a Michigan archery hunting license, but did not verify and tag the deer and was hunting where it's illegal to do so.
