Suspect wanted for allegedly assaulting Mesa police officer

MESA, Ariz. -

Police say they're looking for a suspect who assaulted a Mesa police officer near Alma School Road and Main Street on Wednesday night.

The officer was responding to complaints that a man was allegedly aggressively panhandling and scaring people at the Burger King in the area.

A man matching the suspect's description was walking on Main street near Beverly, but the man started to fight when the officer tried to detain him.

During the struggle, the officer hit his head on the ground, lost consciousness and got a cut on the back of his head that needed several stitches.

Witnesses say the suspect was last seen running southbound on Beverly. Officers searched the area but couldn't find him.

The man was seen at a Circle K in the area with a Hispanic woman shortly before the incident.

Police say they don't know if the woman is involved or just knows the suspect. The suspect is known to hang around the area.
