WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -- It's not quite a holiday portrait, but a mug shot is how Dr. Nana Mimura will remember her Christmas week travels. The 45-year-old internist from Troy was arrested at the airport in Fort Myers, Florida Thursday after her Spirit Airlines flight home was canceled and officials said she started screaming and swearing at ticket agents before she was handcuffed on the ground.
"We just don't know where this was coming from inside of her. We do not know what burst that lid open for her to go into this place of anger and then rage," said Farmington Hills psychologist Dr. Toni Kaplan.
She said it is a given that holiday travel can be stressful with large crowds and unpredictable weather, but she said Mimura's alleged reaction to a canceled flight was not typical.
"It seems like an overreaction. It sounds like an exaggerated response to a situation that perhaps did not warrant it."
No one wanted to talk at Schoenherr Medical Associates where Mimura works. We're told she posted $2,000 bond and was released from a Florida jail.
Mimura also works with Warren Radiology on Schoenherr. She was traveling with her husband at the time of her arrest.
Spirit Airlines told the story this way. "The customer and her husband requested a refund rather than waiting until the afternoon flight, which we provided. She then started causing a disturbance. When police were called in, she was escorted away."
"The first thing in calming is always to breathe because when you're stressed, your breath becomes shortened, quick, fast paced," Kaplan said.
The doctor advises travelers to expect the unexpected during this busy travel time.
