NJ gang leader and drug kingpin turns himself in

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A violent drug kingpin who had eluded capture from New Jersey authorities for several years turned himself in on Friday.

Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow said 31-year-old Luqman Abdullah of Elizabeth was charged with 1st degree Racketeering, and 1st Degree maintaining a narcotics production facility and numerous drug and weapon offenses.

Romankow said bail Abdullah was set at $5 million.

Authorities had been searching for Abdullah since April 2009, when he eluded police who were trying to arrest him at a mall in Edison. Abdullah was also featured on the "America's Most Wanted" television show.

Romankow said that Abdullah turned himself in at the county sheriff's office. It's not clear if he has obtained an attorney.

Authorities say Abdullah was the violent and notorious leader of a Bloods Street Gang who was operating an established drug ring in Elizabeth. He led a network that brought millions of dollars in illegal drugs into New Jersey and has an extensive criminal record, including convictions for shooting a rival drug dealer and other violent acts.
