Beat cop numbers drop during Emanuel administration: Sun-Times analysis

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A new analysis raises questions about the deployment of police officers in Chicago.

The Chicago Sun-Times looked at city data and found fewer beat officers on patrol despite promises by Mayor Emanuel of staffing increases.

Emanuel campaigned on a promise of deploying one thousand more beat officers to high-crime areas of the city.

The Sun-Times analysis found nearly 100 fewer beat cops than when Emanuel took office in 2011.

Part of the reason is the high number of retirements in the Chicago Police Department.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy promised last week that 450 police academy recruits would boost the force in some of Chicago's most dangerous neighborhoods.
