SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -
You can find all sorts of interesting things while hiking in the desert, but this isn't something you'd want to come across.
We're learning about a scary discovery down in southern Arizona.
A hiker found a mortar shell near the old Charleston town site near the San Pedro River.
The Cochise County Sheriff's office says a bomb technician identified it as a 60 millimeter high explosive mortar projectile.
The hiker actually put it in his backpack and brought it to the police -- something they don't recommend.
The shell was taken to a vacant field where it was destroyed.
