UPDATE 1/3/2013: The Redford Township Police Department tells Fox 2 the suspect has been located and they are continuing to investigate.
REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -- Police are on alert in Redford after a stranger tries to lure a little girl with candy. A parent even witnessed the frightening incident.
"Watch your kids. Everywhere they go, watch your kids," said Christine Romain.
As always, Romain said she was watching from her front window as her daughter, Madison, rode her scooter to a neighbor's house three doors down on Poinciana just south of Seven Mile, but this time there was something very unusual. She said she watched as a man driving a newer, red, Ford Fusion approached her six-year-old.
"When I [saw] him rolling his window down, I knew it wasn't good, so I yelled for her to come home," Romain said.
Madison did the right thing. She rushed home on her scooter and told her mom what happened. Romain made a split second decision and decided to run after the guy.
"She said, 'Mom, he asked if I wanted some candy.' And I ran down there, got his license plate number, the make, model, everything with his car, and he took off."
Romain and her daughter spent much of the afternoon at the Redford Police Department. Not only did the first grader know not to talk to strangers, young Madison helped police come up with a sketch of the suspect (shown above) -- a white man with black hair wearing glasses with a silver frame. She also remembered the man wearing a red shirt and coat.
Police believe the suspect lives in the area, and thanks to the details Romain and her daughter were able to give them, it's just a matter of time before they find him.
"Something's mentally wrong with the people like that, for them to prey on small children, something's mentally going on," Romain said.
Police were out Wednesday evening searching for the suspect, but they were unsuccessful in locating him.
