DETROIT (WJBK) -- Crimes stats released Thursday show a total of 411 homicides last year in the city of Detroit, up from 377 in 2011.
The numbers were released during a press briefing held by Mayor Dave Bing, interim Police Chief Chester Logan and other city officials.
In all, Detroit police investigated 461 deaths in the city during 2012. A total of 386 were determined as criminal homicides, up from 344 in 2011. Twenty-five were ruled as justifiable homicides, down from 33 in 2011.
Of the 386 criminal homicides, 333 were caused by guns. "America has a problem with guns, but the epicenter seems to be here in Detroit," said Logan.
This marks the second deadliest year per capita in Detroit history behind only 1987.
Officials, however, say overall crime was down 2.63% as compared to 2011. "The release of annual crime statistics reminds us of the senselessness of crime and violence in our community; the challenges facing our police force; and the need to improve conflict resolution and other anti-crime initiatives," said Bing.
