PHOENIX -

Phoenix Police have identified a 35-year-old man who was shot and killed by a homeowner Wednesday.

He is 35-year-old Jason Floyd Wilson. Wilson previously served time in prison on burglary and drug-related offenses.

Just before 2 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to West Acoma Drive and North 28th Ave on reports of a suspicious person. Officers arrived to find Wilson lying in the roadway with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officers learned that earlier Wilson had tried to break into a parked pickup truck. The alarm sounded and the owner looked outside to see the suspect in his driveway. The suspect then ran down the street.

A second homeowner was awakened by his dogs barking. He observed the suspect trying to force entry into the bedroom where his daughters were sleeping.

He began yelling at the suspect from inside the house, telling him to leave, and when the suspect reached into his pocket the homeowner fired at the suspect, according to police.

Witnesses say Wilson had been talking to himself and exhibiting strange behavior while this incident progressed.

Wilson did not live in the area but he apparently had friends who did.

The homeowner who shot Wilson is not facing any charges at this point.
