Phoenix officer shot in the face thought it was the end

PHOENIX -

A Phoenix Police officer involved in the first of several officer-involved shootings in the past few days is well on the way to recovery.

When talking to this guy, you get a sense of just how strong these officers can be. It's been two days since Officer Peter Bennett was shot, and he is doing great.

Doctors wanted to put him in a wheelchair and bring him down to us, but this officer insisted on walking.

With a bandage over his right ear and a bullet still lodged in his back, Phoenix Police Officer Peter "Chris" Bennett is walking on his own just 24-hours after surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital.

"As you can see, I have a little bit of swelling but I don't have a lot of pain medication, I feel amazing all things considered," he said.

Officer Bennett's jaw is wired shut. He was shot in the face, hip and arm on Sunday night near Christown Mall. Police say Brandon McCabe ran away from Officer Bennett then shot him 6 times.

"Because I was shot in the face I truly believed that that might be the end, and I immediately thought about my family, my children that I may or may not be around for them," said Officer Bennett.

"No I don't get shot at every day, no I don't come across guns every day, but every day when I go to work I say today might be the day I get shot. In my mind, it's mental preparation for surviving an incident like this."

His trauma surgeon, Dr. Raymond Shamos, says, "Someone was watching over him, a higher power."

Officer Bennett should make a full recovery.

"No matter how bad a situation gets, you can get through it, you can survive it. You can make it through the other side."

And doctors will leave the bullet in Bennett's back because it's not causing any problems. It should take months to recover but he says he can't wait to get back to work.
