NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Long Island woman is accused of posing at a Head Start official to run a fake fundraising operation.

Suffolk County Police arrested Ellen Burkheimer in Centerreach.

Police say someone called 911 to report a woman attempting to collect donations under the pretense that she was a representative from the federal program that provides educational and health services to low-income children and their families.

Police say that Burkheimer, 47, was using the money she received to purchase heroin and pay rent.

Burkheimer faces several charges and was arraigned in Central Islip on Monday.  She is being held at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverhead.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on this scheme to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. Police say that all calls will be kept confidential.
