DETROIT (WJBK) -- Leaders from all over Detroit unveiled a plan Wednesday designed to create the thriving city we've always wanted. It's called the "Detroit Future City" plan. It's ambitious and took two years to complete. Think of it as a blueprint of what Detroit could look like in ten, 20 or even 50 years.
The plan offers long-term solutions to some of Detroit's biggest questions like how do you attract businesses and create jobs. According to the plan, Detroit should design economic districts within the city that will support thriving neighborhoods.
What about all the vacant land? Turn some of it into green space and change zoning laws so land can be used more efficiently.
The vision could cost billions of dollars in the long run, but one major foundation has already pledged their support.
"Today we're committing $150-million to the implementation of this plan," said Rip Rapson with the Kresge Foundation.
"This is not about me. This is not about our administration. It's about us, and we have come to the table in a collaborative way with all of your resources. The work really starts today," said Mayor Dave Bing.
"As far as like a ten to 20 year plan, I think it's long overdue," said Wayne State student Leah Pearson.
"In 20 years we're going to look back and this will be an entirely different city. I think in ten years, five years, we will look back and we will see the change, but in 20 years it's going to look entirely different and for the better," said Diane Powers.
