Death threats for Pastor Brooks after giving money to embattled ex-mayor

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago pastor Corey Brooks says he's receiving death threats for giving $2,000 to the embattled former mayor of Detroit.

Brooks plans to turn the death threats over to Chicago police, but he says he isn't beefing up security at his South Side church.

In a story FOX 32 News broke, Brooks wired Kwame Kilpatrick the money last month.

The problem is that Kilpatrick has already spent time in prison and is on trial for felony corruption charges.

Kilpatrick is supposed to be paying restitution on a previous conviction and reporting any income, like that $2,000, but he didn't.

Brooks gave FOX 32 News a statement Wednesday that said as a pastor, he's supposed to show love to forgotten and rejected members of society.

Brooks said, "While we deeply regret that this gift has offended anyone - particularly residents of Detroit - we hope that people will understand that our mission is not to judge, but to love. This is not the first time that we have provided aid to a person that is not universally loved by all. It won't be the last."
