Cops Searching For Father-Son Robbery Suspects

Posted: Updated:

SAN CLEMENTE (CNS) - Orange County sheriff's investigators today released a composite sketch of a man in a father-and-son distraction burglary in San Clemente that netted the thieves about $200,000 in jewelry.

The victim, an 86-year-old man, met the two suspects while out for a walk in his neighborhood about 11 a.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of Calle Hidalgo, Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.

The man was described as white and in his 50s. The boy was believed to be 12-14 years old, Amormino said.

The two arrived in a white sport utility vehicle, Amormino said. The man asked for roofing work, said he was working on a neighbor's home and offered to check his roof for problems, he said.

The older man agreed. After checking the roof, the man said he had found a bad tile and offered to look for evidence of a leak, Amormino said.

The boy distracted the victim while the adult rifled through drawers for valuables, Amormino said.

"The boy was definitely trained in distraction," Amormino said. "He knew exactly how to keep him occupied."

When the victim's wife came home, they realized some $200,000 in jewelry had been taken, Amormino said.

Anyone with information was asked to call Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS.
