Are Tanning Bed Risks Overblown?

Posted: Updated:

Both the FDA and the World Health Organization call tanning beds a carcinogen. Throughout California tanning bed use is now banned for people under 18. Now the tanning salon industry is fighting back.

It wants the tan ban for minors overturned in California. A few weeks ago a group of  1400 salon owners nationwide banded together forming a group called the American Suntanning Association or ASA.

Its mission: To convince the public that the risks of indoor tanning have been overblown. It says the American Academy of Dermatology is largely to blame for this.

The ASA says it's time for what it calls "a higher level of discussion" over the risks versus benefits of indoor tanning.

Joe Levy from the ASA and Dermatologist Sandra Lee appeared on Studio 11 LA to talk about the news.
