Rally to support higher NY minimum wage

Posted: Updated:

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Supporters of a higher minimum wage for New Yorkers hope the idea will pick up steam following Gov. Andrew Cuomo's support in his State of the State address earlier this week.

State Sen. Tim Kennedy is leading a rally in Buffalo Friday that he says will bring together elected officials, community leaders and residents in support of the plan.

Cuomo on Wednesday proposed raising the minimum wage to $8.75 an hour from the current $7.25.

The increase is supported by fellow Democrat and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Republicans who control the Senate prefer business tax breaks to spur the economy.

Kennedy says the current wage barely lifts a family of two above the poverty line. He also favors linking the minimum wage to the Consumer Price Index.
