NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A driver is in critical condition after an early morning shooting at an intersection in Brooklyn early Sunday morning.

Police say the 44-year-old male driver stopped at a red light at the intersection of East 46th Street and Glenwood Avenue around 3:30 a.m. when a gunman walked up and fired three shots through the windshield and driver's side door of the victim's Mercedes.

The unidentified driver was struck in the forehead and leg and was taken to Kings County Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

A 36-year-old male passenger was not shot, according to police.

Authorities say the suspect may have fled in a black SUV and believe the driver was targeted but are not sure why.

According to the New York Post, the victim has at least two prior arrests in Brooklyn, including one for possessing large quantities of hard drugs.
