ATLANTA (AP) - A former Atlanta police chief has been honored with a lifetime achievement award from a national law enforcement association.
The Major Cities Chiefs Association honored Richard J. Pennington, Atlanta's 22nd police chief, with the lifetime achievement award during a private ceremony Monday.
Pennington in 2002 was appointed as Atlanta police chief and led the department to being accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Officials say Pennington also helped create the Atlanta Police Foundation, which is a public-private partnership focused on crime reduction and prevention.
The Atlanta Police Department is Georgia's largest law enforcement agency with a force of more than 2,000 sworn officers.
