Hamilton High students to attend Obama's inauguration

CHANDLER, Ariz. -

History will come alive for 35 students at Hamilton High School. They go to classes like other students, but it's this field trip that will set them apart.

In Mrs. Sarah Burges's American Studies class at Hamilton High School, there's always a lively discussion of history and politics.

"It's a really fun class, it's a lot of learning but a lot of fun," says Paula Beatty.

Beatty is one of the students doing more than talking about politics. She's one of 35 juniors and seniors going to watch history in the making. They will be in Washington DC for the inauguration.

"It's probably going to be a once in a lifetime deal, when I become an adult I will not have the time and I hear Beyoncé is performing," says Nithin Rajkumar.

The juniors and seniors have been planning the trip for more than a year, before they knew Beyoncé would be at inauguration. They were planning it before they even knew who won the election!

"It's exciting, this is the last time Obama will ever be inaugurated, and it's a story to tell," says student Zak Ghali.

It's a four day trip. Besides the presidential inauguration, students will visit national landmarks.

The teens had to raise $1,600 each for the trip. Most of that money came from friends and family.

For the students, it's also a chance to see democracy in action right in front of them.

"I think it's important to be involved in politics at a young age, so when you grow up you can have your vote and have your say in politics," says Beatty.

One thing everyone will be bringing -- warm clothes. It's cold in DC. The students are flying out on Saturday.
