Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu and others unveiled a $30 million plan that would add hundreds of school resource officers to patrol Arizona campuses. This plan is meant as a way to prevent gun attacks on Arizona school campuses.
Money would also go toward mental health screenings and guidance counseling.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu says our schools are sitting ducks right now and an attack could happen any time.
Sheriff Paul Babeu, State Senator Rich Crandall and National Association of School Resource Officers President Kevin Quinn have devised a three part plan for school safety.
They call it a "reasonable plan" that would beef up school resource officers on campuses with a $30 million budget.
"We have gun free safe school zones, there was an act in 1990 and 1995, that protects our schools. There's a thousand foot perimeter that is supposed to keep a safe school zone. And in fact, what it's done is create an alluring target for criminals and mass murderers who see them as an opportunity," said Babeu.
Thirty million dollars would come from three possible sources that include:
1. Redirecting excess collected clean elections funds 2. Transferring tax on private party auto sales 3. A percentage tax on alcohol sales.
$24 million would go to school resource officers $4.5 million towards mental health awareness $1.5 million towards training for school counselors
The devised plan would enable another 300 SRO's to be placed in schools in addition to the current 300 to 400 on campuses now. These SRO's would come from local police agencies.
Babeu and Crandall say each school district can determine whether teachers can become armed SRO's too.
School resource officers would need a week's worth of training before they are put on campuses.
NASRO does not support arming teachers or staff members in schools.
