A woman working on a broken-down vehicle was injured when she was hit by a hit-and-run driver Tuesday, on I-17 near Pinnacle Peak Road.
The victim was working on the front of a silver car in the southbound HOV lane of I-17 southbound when a pickup truck crashed into the back, Tuesday about 5 p.m.
The driver of the pickup and its passenger fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood.
"Witnesses to the crash actually chased after them while staying on 911 with us," said DPS officer Carrick Cook.
Police set up a perimeter and apprehended the suspects in an apartment complex called "The Retreat."
The woman, who is in her 40s, was taken to the hospital with severe injuries. It's not known what was the problem that caused the woman to stop her car in the HOV lane.
There's no obvious reason that the suspects fled -- no active warrants -- but it's possible drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.
Southbound lanes of the I-17 were closed between 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
