DETROIT (WJBK) -- The falcon-winged Model X prototype from Tesla is a seven passenger crossover with the functionality of a minivan and the sexiness of a sleek sport ute.
Joe Harary was among the crowd leaning in for a closer look.
"It'll go from zero to 60 in under four seconds," he said. "It gets you to the soccer game a little faster."
Tesla on Tuesday touted both the X and its 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year, the S. Both are electrics, and Tesla is hoping to lure new buyers with super charging -- just not the kind of super charging you find in gasoline powered hot rods.
"Super charging -- you can stop and in 30 minutes you can get 150 miles of charge," said George Blankenship.
Tesla has super charging stations on the coasts, more on the way and Blankenship said, "It's free. You don't need a credit card. You don't need a password. You don't need a debit card. You don't need a key. You don't need anything. You pull up. You plug in. You don't leave $100 when you leave."
There have been hiccups. Recently an AutoWeek Magazine editor couldn't get his Tesla test car unplugged from an outlet.
Tesla said it was just one single poorly manufactured part from a supplier.
"The AutoWeek thing was an anomaly issue. We dealt with it. It had nothing to do with the powertrain of the car or the actual car itself. It was just a poorly developed part," said Franz Von Holzhausen.
Back to Harary, whose company makes automotive smart glass, he has a big family, and during the Tesla press event he said out loud "I want one," which is how we came to interview him.
"It's a stunning vehicle, it really is," he said. "It looks very practical. The performance looks fantastic, and I have six kids, so this is the perfect car for me."
And for just a hair under $100,000, the Model S could be yours and you could be on your way for a 300 mile trip before you have to recharge.
