Lenox Hill Hospital cuts paramedic services for city

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Lenox Hill Hospital will no longer provide paramedics during its ambulance shifts in Manhattan. The hospital will continue to provide EMTs, who have less training, on its ambulances. The move, which will go into effect on Feb. 10, 2013, is a cost-cutting measure.

A spokesperson for Lenox Hill Hospital says the decision was made six months ago but the paramedics were notified about the cuts on Wednesday.

"The restructuring will enable us to become more operationally efficient, improve our service and better control costs," Ann Silverman said in a statement to Fox 5 News.

Emergency medical technicians have less training and are not permitted to administer most medications.

The FDNY says it will fill the gap with its own paramedics and another hospital will also help out, DNAinfo.com reported.

Lenox Hill is part of the North Shore-LIJ network. The paramedics will be allowed to transfer into open positions within the system at their current pay rate, according to the hospital.
