CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Bond was set at $200,000 on Friday for a 22-year-old Albany Park man charged with cruelty to animals for allegedly kicking in the front door to his ex-girlfriend's Uptown neighborhood apartment and repeatedly stabbing her cat.
As he was leaving the apartment, Miguel Vazquez yelled that he'd "left a surprise" for her upstairs, police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said. The cat survived the attack but was seriously injuried.
The incident happened Monday night in the 4200 block of North Kenmore Avenue, Kubiak said.
Vazquez is alleged to have kicked open the front door to the apartment about 9 p.m. and damaged her belongings. He then stabbed the 1-year-old cat multiple times about its body, causing serious injury, Kubiak said. The cat has been taken to a veterinarian for treatment.
As Vazquez was leaving the building about 1 a.m., he was confronted by his ex-girlfriend and her friends. Vazquez struck a 25-year-old man in the back of the head with a padlock, causing him to lose consciousness and suffer a laceration to the head, Kubiak said.
The man was taken to Thorek Hospital, police said.
Vazquez then ran out, yelling to his ex that "he left a surprise for her upstairs," Kubiak said.
On Thursday, the 19th District Burglary Mission Team, along with assisting units, were able to locate Vazquez at his home, where he was arrested.
He was charged with one count each of aggravated cruelty to animals, aggravated battery/use of a deadly weapon, and residential burglary.
Vazquez appeared before Judge Donald Panarese Jr. on Friday and was ordered held on $200,000. His next court date was scheduled for Jan. 24.
