Now into its fifth day, the strike by more than 8,000 school bus drivers and matrons is under review by the National Labor Relations Board.
On one of the coldest days in recent memory, school bus workers stuck to picket lines as parents across the city found other ways to get children to and from school.
The National Labor Relations Board heard arguments on the legality of this strike. If it is determined to be illegal, drivers and matrons could be forced to go back to work.
The Board is expected to issue a ruling by the end of the week.
Members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181 are demanding job security after their contracts went out to bid by the city last month.
The Bloomberg administration has said it will not negotiate with the bus company that hires the drivers and matrons because it is a private sector business.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg has repeatedly referred to the decision by several courts that guaranteeing employee protection is illegal.
