Gov. Pat Quinn says he left a school safety summit with pages of ideas for making Illinois schools safer.
More than 50 people attended the Tuesday summit at the Illinois Emergency Management Agency in Springfield. They included representatives from education, law enforcement and public safety.
Quinn called the meeting following last month's school shooting in Connecticut. He says that shooting and one in a Colorado movie theater last year served as an "alarm bell."
The governor described the summit as an early step in an ongoing conversation. He says ideas discussed may ultimately lead to legislation.
Quinn says he wants to make sure the state has adequate mental health resources. He also says students must be encouraged to tell an adult if they learn of potential violence.
