FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -

A 17-year-old Tempe boy has died in a sledding accident in Flagstaff.

The teen and 11 of his high school classmates were sledding in an area known as Mountainaire, which is south of Flagstaff, just off the I-17.

He was on a sled with a friend when they lost control and hit a tree on Sunday.

The teen was rushed to Flagstaff Medical Center but died during surgery Monday afternoon. He suffered multiple serious external and internal injuries. The other person sitting behind him on the sled suffered minor injuries.

The victim has been identified as 17-year-old Jake McGrady of Tempe. He went to Corona Del Sol High School.

We spoke to some family members who told us Jake was a great kid and what happened was a horrible tragedy.

Two parents were on the trip supervising the teens.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Department is investigating the accident.
