Runaway bus crashes on Upper East Side

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A bus driver passed out while driving an MTA bus filled with passengers on the Upper East Side, authorities said.

The bus, from the BxM18 line, crashed into several cars along Madison Avenue, the FDNY said.

A passenger, Guy Praisler, who was sitting near the front of the bus, grabbed the wheel and along with other passengers tried to steer the bus clear of pedestrians. The driver's foot remained on the gas, but the bus finally stopped at East 85th Street, Praisler said.

The driver was taken to NewYork Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Five other people were hurt, officials said. Two suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and three suffered minor injuries, officials said.

Medics were evaluating 16 other people.

The MTA was diverting buses along that route around the crash scene.

The BxM18 runs from lower Manhattan to the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
