Baby shower held for dozens of military wives at Phoenix Open

Posted: Updated:

Usually a baby shower celebrates one child's birth, but today 40 special moms attended a shower in north Scottsdale.

Why so many?

The Waste Management Phoenix Open starts Thursday, but the parties have already started. This one is for dozens of military moms, like Sgt. Theresa Ray.

"In my case, I just recently relocated here in May, didn't know anybody, didn't have any friends, I didn't have a shower," she says.

This shower is special. Sgt. Theresa Ray gave birth to a son and now she's shipping out to war. Her husband Sgt. Lucas Ray will take care of their kids.

"We'll do what we have to do, I've done it before," says Sgt. Lucas Ray.

That's why Leanne Morrissey came up with the idea. Her uncle told her four of his soldiers' wives were pregnant. He asked her for a favor.

"He said it's really about the moms, could you send them a card or something, that would be marvelous," says Morrissey.

Morrissey sent gifts, then held showers, and called it Babies of the Brave.

The showers are over-the-top special events, inviting women who have just given birth or who are expecting.

All the moms go home with gifts -- some are for the babies and others are just for mom.

Wherever there is a PGA tournament, you'll find a baby shower for military families.

"I'm very grateful," says Sgt. Ray, speaking for all the moms.

The gifts for the mothers were donated by sponsors of the PGA.
