How to help victims of Wednesday's storms

Metro Atlanta's Red Cross and chapters statewide in Georgia say they are prepared to help after Wednesday's severe weather.

The Northwest Georgia Chapter (Rome) says it is working closely with local emergency management agencies after Wednesday's storm. They have opened a shelter at Manning Mill Youth Facility, 163b Manning Mill Road in Adairsville for displaced families.

According to the Red Cross, the shelter will provide meals, cots, blankets, health support and a safe refuge.

The Red Cross said the best way to help is by donating cash.

You can make a donation to the Red Cross phone (1-800-REDCROSS), email (, text (90999) or email (P.O. Box 1955 Monroe Drive, Atlanta, GA 30342).

A Red Cross shelter has been set up at Belmont Baptist Church, 275 West Belmont Drive in Calhoun -- enter at B doorway by the playground.


Milton, Georgia will be collecting items at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church, located at 180 Academy Street on Saturday, February 2 from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. Many items are needed and include, meals in a can, toiletries, cleaning supplies, cell phone calling cards, batteries, tarps, and gas cards. The Salvation Army is partnering with the Red Cross to serve meals in the shelter and from canteen vehicles in the community.

United Way of Bartow County is accepting donations for victims of the storm. Click here for the details or call 770-386-1677.


A shelter has been set up on Manning Mill Road Gym off Highway 41 in Adairsville, officials said.

Northpointe Church on Orchard Road has also set up a shelter.

Living Way Foursquare Church said they have power, showers, food, and a place for the displaced to sleep if needed. For information, call 678-414-0054.


The Bartow Christian Disaster Response Team says they are seeking volunteers.

The Calhoun Fire Department Station 2 is acception donations for victims of Wednesday's tornado.

The biggest demand is for nonperishable food. Bottled water, building supplies such as 2 x 4 studs, hammers, blue plastic tarps, plywood and roofing materials, baby formula, baby diapers (all sizes), personal hygiene products, leather work gloves, cleaning supplies such as bleach, mops, brooms and buckets, plastic goods (food wrap, cups and cutlery), paper goods (plates, napkins, towels and toilet tissue), disposable gloves (rubber or latex) and trash bags (all sizes) also are needed.

The fire station is located at 391 Richardson Rd., Calhoun, Ga. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, until further notice.

Used clothing is not needed.

Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Cartersville is joining with other Bartow County Churches Saturday to respond to recovery needs in Adairsville following Wednesday's tornados.

A work group of older teens and adults will meet at Church of the Ascension at 7:30 a.m. Saturday before heading to Adairsville. For more information, contact Keith Martin 678 859-2795.
