Sheriff's Office gets 400 semi-automatic assault rifles for deputies

PHOENIX -

MCSO is adding hundreds of military-style weapons to its artillery. The sheriff's office gave us a look at their new semi-automatic weapons Wednesday.

They're buying 400 assault rifles to help protect deputies.

The weapons are being purchased with money from the sheriff's RICO fund, which is made up of cash confiscated from drug dealers.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he wants his deputies to have stronger firepower than any violent criminals.

"It's equipped with optics, lighting and adjustable stocks.  It also has the capacity for 30 round magazine..it's what deputies will be issued. These are semiautomatic weapons," explained Dept. Joaquin Enriquez.

The sheriff says criminals are all too willing to fire at law enforcement -- and he wants to arm them with the most powerful weapons he can.
