Authorities Blow Up Explosives In Riverside Home

Posted: Updated:

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- Southern California authorities have blown up highly explosive chemicals at the home of a packrat who was arrested on suspicion of firing a gun in his front yard.
Riverside police Lt. Guy Toussaint says police and ATF agents found the chemicals Thursday. They were detonated in the backyard.
A handgun and rifle also were found.
Toussaint says there could be more chemicals but investigators won't know until they've finished searching the house, which is jammed with stuff.
Five neighboring homes have been evacuated.
Police arrested 46-year-old William Hunziker on Tuesday on suspicion of firing a gun and possessing a silencer.
Toussaint describes Hunziker as a hoarder but says it's unclear what he was doing with the chemicals. He lived with his mother at the trash-strewn house.
