Robbery Pursuit Crash Leaves 1 Suspect Dead, 2 Injured

Los Angeles, CA -

I could only tell you a story like this in LA.

The driver of a dry cleaning van had just left a production studio picking up dirty clothes worn by actors in the TV drama "Bones." That's what he does every night. He takes actors clothes to be cleaned and then reworn on the next day's shoot. As he gets to the 5 freeway in Lincoln Heights he was caught up in his own drama -- hit by an SUV flipping in the air. He's lucky to be alive.

What he didn't know was what LAPD Sgt. Rudy Lopez told me -- that just before 2 am the three men from that SUV that hit the cleaning van robbed a 7-11 clerk at knifepoint. The trio took off at a high rate of speed and were chased by police. When they got on the I-5 they lost control, careened across three to four lanes, smacked into a bridge support, flipped several times in the air, hit that cleaning van, and landed on its roof.

The three suspects had to be extricated from the SUV since it was pancaked. The driver died. His two injured partners-in-crime were sent to the hospital. The cleaning van driver went to the hospital too, but was released, according to his boss.

What was left on the freeway was a traffic nightmare. For hours, commuters were rerouted around the investigation scene. Yellow tape across the freeway -- something you don't see that everyday. And, if your the driver of a dry cleaning van that transports dirty clothes for actors in TV dramas it's not everyday you end up in your own

(CNS) One person was killed this morning when an SUV carrying armed robbery suspects fleeing police collided with another vehicle on the Golden State (5) Freeway in the Lincoln Heights section of Los Angeles, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol was notified of the crash on the northbound side of the freeway at Pasadena Avenue just after 2 a.m., according to CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos. One vehicle overturned and there was one confirmed fatality, he said.

One person was dead at the scene and at least two others were taken to hospitals, a news photographer reported from the crash site. The deceased person was among armed robbery suspects in an SUV that crashed into another vehicle while being pursued by officers, according to Los Angeles police.

Officers spotted the SUV being driven recklessly and then learned it matched the description of a vehicle used by suspects fleeing an armed robbery at a 7-Eleven convenience store, said Officer Christopher No of the LAPD's Media Relations Section.

Broadcast footage from the scene showed bills and rolled coins on the pavement outside the crashed SUV, which had collided with a van, according to the photographer.

All northbound lanes of the freeway remained closed hours after the crash, and traffic was being diverted onto the Pasadena (110) Freeway, Villalobos said.

Traffic was being allowed to pass the crash scene single-file by using a transition road to the 110, then jumping a raised gore point to get back onto the northbound 5, but the wreck was causing a major backup as the morning rush got underway.
