Her father was Strom Thurmond, a one-time segregationist South Carolina senator. Her mom was his maid. The whole thing was kept secret for more than 70 years.
But when Essie Mae Washington-Williams died Sunday, everyone knew her story. The 87 year old revealed to the world who her father was after he died. And for some, she has become a symbol of America's complicated racial history.
