NYC on snow alert

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Just days after the first true blizzard hit New York City in more than two years, the Department of Sanitation issued a snow alert for Wednesday, February 13, 2013, starting at 4 p.m., officials announced.

A snow alert means that the city begins to prepare for the possibility of measurable snowfall in the five boroughs. The response is complicated by the fact that this coming snow storm is just a few days after the blizzard, which dumped between four inches and a foot of snow across the city.

The Sanitation Department has begun to load 365 salt spreaders, attach plows, prepare tire chains, and notify supplementary personnel as needed.

"All relevant city agencies have been notified of the snow alert," the Sanitation Department said in a statement.

The city's lead agencies in dealing with the snow are the Sanitation Department, the Transportation Department, and the Office of Emergency Management.
