The victim of an alleged abduction and carjacking that began in Chicago's River North area early Friday and ended in northwest suburban Schaumburg wants police to stop their investigation and will not pursue charges if the alleged offender is found, according to police.
The incident began sometime before 4 a.m. Friday, in Chicago. The woman, a Rockford resident in her 20s, told police she was abducted near LaSalle Boulevard and Oak Street in Chicago, authorities said.
Authorities in Schaumburg were alerted to the carjacking about 4 a.m. after the woman -- who a Chicago police source said had been beaten and was put into the trunk of her vehicle by the assailant -- was somehow able to activate her OnStar alarm system, Schaumburg Police Sgt. John Nebl said.
Officials at OnStar called police, who found the woman near a hotel at National Parkway and Woodfield Road, Nebl said.
Nebl said officers had believed the man was hiding in an area surrounded by Golf, Plum Grove, Higgins and Meacham roads, which includes four hotels and several shops and office centers. Officers searched the area on foot and with K-9 units, Nebl said, but the search was called off about 7:30 a.m.
"We believe the man left the area possibly before officers arrived," Nebl said.
The victim left the Schaumburg police station by 8 a.m., he said. She did not want police to continue looking for the man, and she said she would not pursue charges if he was found.
Nebl did not know if the woman knew the man, but he said Schaumburg residents have no reason for "fear or concern" that a violent offender is at-large.
