Large Oil Drums Delivered To SoCal To Aid Fuel Refinery

(CNS) Redondo Beach's King Harbor will get a king-size delivery Monday, when two gigantic metal drums will be unloaded for a trip up city streets, it was reported this weekend.

Local newspapers reported that the 500,000 pound "coke drums," which resemble tanks, will arrive in Redondo Beach on a barge from the Port of Los Angeles Monday morning. They are both 100 feet long and 28 feet across. And they are the first two of six drums to be trans-shipped at a pier at King Harbor, the newspaper reported.

The drums will be used as "cokers" at the nearby Chevron refinery in El Segundo. They will be used to heat crude oil to "crack" it and refine different grades of petroleum fuel, and will replace units installed in the 1960s, the Daily Breeze reported.

The cokers are to be unloaded from the barge from about 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, and then by hauled by self-propelled modular transporters along Marina Way and Harbor Drive. At a holding area at Pacific Coast Highway, they will be transferred to different vehicles that will haul the 28-foot-wide, 28-foot-high loads up PCH and Sepulveda Boulevard to El Segundo.

Overhead traffic lights will need to be turned sideways and other temporary adjustments will need to be done along Highway 1 from Redondo Beach to El Segundo at 10 p.m. Wednesday night and stretching until 5 a.m. Thursday.

The other two pairs of cokers are scheduled to be unloaded on Feb. 25 and March 4, the newspaper reported, and the shuffles up PCH and Sepulveda will occur Feb. 27 and March 6.

The tanks were built in Spain, according to a local newspaper.
