FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Crews rescued two college students who were stranded on Humpreys Peak in northern Arizona during a hike.
The Coconino County Sheriff's Office says the two Northern Arizona University students were rescued at 11,750 feet Sunday night after they encountered high winds that prompted them to leave the trail they were on.
The hikers didn't have sufficient clothing or equipment for the hike.
Along the way, 19-year-old Nicholas Brown and 21-year-old Christopher Cuellar encountered deep snow and became disoriented, so they called 911 on a cellphone.
A helicopter that was unable to land because of high winds instead dropped bags of warm clothes, food and water to the pair.
Crews on the ground then managed to reach the two students.
Brown and Cuellar refused medical treatment.
