ATLANTA -

Police say a woman was struck and killed as she tried to cross a street in southwest Atlanta on Tuesday morning.  It happened around 6 a.m. as investigators say she was on her way to work.

According to investigators, Cassandra Head, a mother of five and grandmother of 16, was hit by a dark-colored SUV while using a crosswalk at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Bakers Ferry Road. The driver of the SUV did not stop, and police say the vehicle may have been seen heading in the direction of Fairburn Road.

Head died at the scene.  Her son, Antonio Cunningham, told FOX 5 his mother was on her way to the bus stop at the time of the accident.  He said his mother normally drove to work, but her car broke down last week and she had been catching the bus since then.  He said he had offered to drive her, but she wanted to get there on her own.

Police say their only description of the car is that it's a dark SUV, and it should have front-end damage. Head's family is pleading for the driver responsible to come forward.

Atlanta police said on Wednesday they have identified a suspect, but no arrest has been made.
