Former NYPD Officer Stephen Spiro is auctioning the letters he exchanged with Mark David Chapman, the convicted killer of Beatles legend John Lennon.

"A letter came out of the blue three years after the murder. I thought I'd correspond with him and see what happens. He was writing that I had premonitions that something was going to happen that night. And that I had said this was part of history when I locked him up. What he was trying to imply that we were part of something destined to happen and that Holding Caufield from the Catcher in the Rye was his statement and he wanted me to read it," said Spiro

Spiro, who is 65 years old, says he needs the money to pay for medical bills. He also says he will donate some of the proceeds to a battered womens shelter in Rockland County.

The letters are up for auction at MomentsInTime.com.
