Marana woman sentenced in abuse of her stepson

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Marana woman has been sentenced to two years in jail and seven years' probation for horsewhipping her teenage stepson and handcuffing him to a bed or chair.

Pima County prosecutors said Sugey Santos-Cordova also was ordered Friday to perform 200 hours of community service.

Santos-Cordova and her husband were indicted after his son told workers last year at Marana Middle School that he was too scared to go home. An investigation revealed evidence of abuse.

During a forensic interview, the 14-year-old boy said his stepmother beat him with her hands, a belt and a horsewhip and he sometimes was handcuffed to his brother's bed or a chair.

The Arizona Daily Star ( says Santos-Cordova pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse and one count of kidnapping.
