Savannah goes after shoes hanging from power lines

Posted: Updated:

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Savannah police have been going after an unusual source of blight - tennis shoes hanging from power lines.

Police Capt. DeVonn Adams turned to Georgia Power for help recently when residents at homeowners association meetings complained that dangling sneakers were giving their neighborhoods a bad image. Police say that's because shoes hung on power lines have historically signaled drugs were being sold nearby.

Georgia Power crews helped police round up 200 shoes found hanging overhead in residential areas.

Adams says he wants to keep collecting shoes from around the city as long as the utility is willing to help.
