Blackhawks NHL record stands at 19 games, 2 more points in the bank

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Blackhawks have now recorded at least one point in 19 consecutive games as they edged the Edmonton Oilers in overtime 3-2.

It's easy to get spoiled by the Blackhawks incredible start to this season. What keeps my emotions in check are the memories of the many games just like Monday night when the Hawks would have found a way to lose rather than win.

The Oilers have had the Hawks number of late and it looked as if they were going to get out of Chicago with two points. As soon as Viktor Stalberg's game tying goal early in the third frame was deemed official by the Toronto war room the Oilers were never the same.

Edmonton was playing a solid game, probably well enough to win on most nights but they couldn't close the deal. The Oilers played through the third period as if they were afraid to lose and in overtime they couldn't muster one shot on goal.

Most naturally the Blackhawks are a confident bunch and they wouldn't be denied. During 1:44 of overtime the Hawks were credited with six shots on goal. Patrick Sharp put forth a great effort which led to Marian Hossa tucking one behind Nikolai Khabibulin and another two points was in the bank.

The Hawks will close out the month by battling the Blues in St. Louis on Thursday. They will be back at the United Center on Friday for a return engagement with Columbus before facing the Red Wings in a Sunday morning game in Detroit.

After registering a win versus Edmonton the Hawks lead the Western Conference by eight points. The Chicago cushion in the Central Division over second place Nashville is a whopping 12 points and the Predators have played one additional game.

Al's Shots

This is different look Blackhawks in a few ways.

Every goal scored on the Oilers came about because a forward drove hard to the net.

Patrick Kane scored on a great individual effort and his backhander came from close range. Stalberg, with the help of a nice assist by Michal Rozsival, got to the net and was rewarded. Patrick Sharp made a powerful move to get to Khabibulin and Hossa picked up the loose change.

Rozsival won't win any races but he is veteran who knows how to play. He shows patience with the puck and has good vision. He reminds me of Brent Sopel who was instrumental in helping to win the Cup in 2010.

Ray Emery had another sharp outing. The Oilers first goal happened because of a Duncan Keith blow out and their second came on the power play. Emery had no chance on either.

One Blackhawk who hasn't been firing on all cylinders is Jonathan Toews.

Last night Toews seemed to be fighting the puck and missed some scoring opportunities. Toews has not recorded a point in his last four games and is a -1 during that span. He is showing some frustration on the ice. Toews has been credited with only one shot on goal in each of the last two contests.

The Captain will come around eventually and the great news for Hawk fans is his slump hasn't mattered.

The Oilers were credited with 42 hits, the Blackhawks 29.

Dan Carcillo recorded a game high six hits.

The Hawks had 34 shots on goal and the Oils were credited with 19 blocked shots.

Not a bad effort at all for the Hawks considering it was their third game in four days.

I will be back on Friday morning.
