Some credit mandatory gun law for Kennesaw's low crime rate

KENNESAW, Ga. -

Kennesaw police say they're enjoying the city's lowest crime rate in a decade. Some say the city's decades-old law that requires every home to have a gun could be a factor.

Citizens have been required by law to have a gun in their home since 1982.

Lt. Craig Graydon of the Kennesaw Police Department said that in 2012, the town reported its lowest crime since 2001. He said they haven't had a homicide in nearly six years, and have only had nine murders in the last two decades.

"Entering autos, car break-ins – that kind of thing – an occasional burglary. But we're pretty fortunate our violent crime rate is extremely low here," said Graydon.

Graydon said the gun law may have sent a message to would-be criminals.

"We think that it did have some impact, whether it makes people more aware of crime and crime prevention, or maybe psychologically some of the people do think twice if they're going to come up here at commit a crime because they believe that more citizens here are armed than in other communities," said Graydon.

Matt Hurley feels comfortable walking his dog during all times of the day, but he's still not convinced the bad guys have gotten the message to stay away from Kennesaw.

"I think it might bring comfort to the locals. But how would someone that was a criminal or  was of ill intent – how would they even know that Kennesaw had a gun law," Hurley said.

The Kennesaw Police Department is offering its first gun safety class on Saturday, March 9 from 10 a.m. to noon. Attendees will learn basic firearms safety, get information on city and state gun laws and receive a free gun lock.
